Database Administrator Team Lead

Role and Responsibilities :- Primary
• Motivate and support a team of Database Administrators to deliver key projects to aggressive time scales.
• Ensure that the PlusNet databases are operationally maintained, including best practice for database performance, tuning, monitoring, backup and recovery.
• Lead the creation of enterprise level technical documentation for every project worked on.
• In conjunction with Network Operations, lead the creation of technical support documentation for every project worked on.
• Own and deliver the technical roadmap for PlusNet databases within agreed timescales.
• Supervise team members to ensure productivity and to communicate development and training needs.
• Supervise the development of team projects to ensure that they are fit for purpose by enforcing regular code configuration reviews.
• Represent the DBA team for projects and liaise with other departments to ensure their well-timed delivery.
• Mentor junior staff to assist with their transition into PlusNet's culture.
• Support more junior members of staff with their day-to-day activities.
• Investigate, document, debug and performance test any changes to PlusNet's core infrastructure.
• Configure and deploy database software to project-based technical specifications in an accurate, resilient and timely manner, ensuring as few issues as possible.
• Ensure infrastructure design is simple, resilient, scalable, reliable, modular and as secure as possible and performs within benchmarks outlined in project specifications.
• Participation in on-call rota in event of major service effecting issue.
• Follow formal testing procedures, and ensure that all changes have a formal, agreed testing plan.
• Ensure that change controls are performed using the agreed formal processes.
• Provide team level KPIs to the head of Network Development on a daily basis.
• Participate in QA post project reviews to ensure feedback is passed back to the team and learned from.
• Provide assistance and input for each team member's appraisals.
• Ensure that your team's timesheets are completed, accurate and submitted on time each month.

Essential Skills:
• 5 years working in an operational Database Administration environment.
• Significant experience of Database Development within an ISP environment.
• Ability to line manage, mentor and lead a team.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the business.
• Ability to prioritise numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints.
• Ability to work out of hours if required.
• Strong cross-functional thinking.
• Strong organisational skills, able to work under time pressure.
• Understanding of the network and software development process.
• Able to produce high quality technical documentation.


Technical skills:
• In depth knowledge of MySQL v4 and v5 – installation, configuration and administration.
• In depth knowledge of Oracle 10g – installation, configuration and administration.
• Strong experience of database backup and recovery methodologies in practice.
• Strong experience of SQL tuning and database performance optimisation.
• Strong experience of database monitoring.
• In depth knowledge of Linux (Debian) and Solaris 10.
• Experience of common ISP applications (Apache, PHP, MySQL, Oracle, JBoss, Tomcat, Radius, Exim, Nagios, Bind).
• Background of practical security within design.
