Traffic management and the Plusnet network
With 8Mb speeds on the way, the way we manage our network and manage traffic becomes even more important. The full automation of our traffic management should be completed in the next two months, and this will allow us to guarantee you a quality broadband service and ensure that your time-sensitive applications always run at high-speed.

You can find out more about how we manage our network to ensure that you get a quality experience.

The Plusnet family gets bigger and better!
On November 28th Plusnet plc bought Parbin Limited, trading as the award-winning Internet Service Provider, Metronet. We're delighted to welcome them into the Plusnet family, and this deal shows that we're continuing to grow and that we're determined to remain one of the leading ISPs in the UK.

By the end of February, Metronet customers will be able to benefit from self-serve portal tools and 24 hour support at 0845 rates. During spring and summer we'll evolve the Metronet products to include some of the features that Plusnet plc customers enjoy such as PlusTalk and Wireless Broadband. We also plan to make a great-value, Metronet style PAYGO option available to Plusnet plc customers in the summer.

Good news for Broadband Plus and Home Surf customers
We're working with BT and alternative broadband suppliers to develop our network in order to remove idle timeouts from both these products by the summer. Idle timeouts were implemented because of a flaw in the existing BT product design which should be removed in the coming months. This flaw does not exist when using alternative broadband network providers.

High-speed broadband update

Broadband at up to 8Mb will be sweeping the nation this year and we'll be giving you access to these higher speeds as soon as they become available to you. That means you'll get free upgrades to faster speeds, providing your telephone line can support them. We're also making some exciting changes to our products and pricing based on the arrival of faster speeds, including Broadband Plus up to 8Mb for £14.99 and Broadband Premier up to 8Mb for just £21.99!

These product changes strengthen our position as the UK's best value ISP, and mean that you can recommend us to your friends, safe in the knowledge that they'll get a great deal now and in the future.

If you're already paying for an ‘up to 4Mb' or ‘up to 8Mb' product and we find that you can't get these faster speeds, and you have not benefited directly by the higher budgeted amounts of capacity on our network associated with your account, we'll refund any extra money that you have paid.

Gazing into our crystal ball for 2006

2006 promises to be an exciting year, both for Plusnet and for broadband.

We'll be making our website even more useful for you, and adding to the self-serve features that you already enjoy. We've already updated the Member Centre and support pages to give you faster access to the information you need, and this year we'll be improving the website search tool and making the My Account area easier to use.

VoIP usage in the UK is also likely to explode this year. Our own PlusTalk VoIP offering is going from strength to strength, and from April we'll be bundling in free calls with all our broadband products at no extra cost. If you're curious about PlusTalk, give it a try today.

Online gaming and video downloads are going to become more popular, with the Xbox 360, Sony PS3 and the iPod with video looking set to be the year's hottest buys. Plusnet is committed to providing a quality broadband service for these new exciting developments.

Towards the end of the year we expect the digital home to start becoming a reality, with cool gadgets such as the Slim Devices Squeezebox and the Buffalo Wireless Media Player becoming more mainstream.

What is PlusTalk?

After issue 1 of Plus, we got a lot of people asking us for more information on PlusTalk. Here's a quick rundown of what PlusTalk is, how you use it and how it can save you money.

PlusTalk is our VoIP (Voice over IP) service. It lets you make phone calls using your broadband connection, meaning you won't be billed for them on your BT phone bill. You can make free calls to other people with VoIP services using your broadband line, and by using a webcam you can even video-call for free to friends and family all over the world.

You can also make calls to any other normal phone line and benefit from cheap call rates. All you need is a headset, a VoIP phone or a broadband phone router that lets you make PlusTalk calls using your regular phone.

There are 3 PlusTalk packages available, with something to suit everyone from the occasional user to the total chatterbox

- PlusTalk Pay As You Go
- PlusTalk Evenings and Weekends
- PlusTalk Anytime
