| With our existing range of ADSL products
for Home and Business users, you'll notice that installation is carried
out at your premises by an engineer with the required equipment, being
either a USB-modem or Ethernet router/hub, supplied as part of the
set-up fee.
By allowing you to purchase and install your own ADSL modem or
router equipment, the additional overheads involved in sending out
onsite engineers and maintaining equipment can be removed, the net
result being lower subscription charges.
Lower subscription charges then, but another great benefit is choice.
By choosing the Self-Install option you are able to choose exactly
which type of equipment you'd prefer to connect with, in much the
same way as with more traditional modems or routers. Although not
supplying this equipment to you ourselves, for your convenience
we will be recommending equipment that we feel offers good value
for money.
What equipment will I need?
Once ADSL service is switched on to your premises (there is a one-off
£50 +VAT activation fee for this), you'll need to 'split'
your line into two halves; the telephone (voice) connection and
the high-speed digital line into which you plug your ADSL equipment.
You do this using a simple line 'splitter' which plugs into your
telephone socket just like a normal phone adaptor. You would then
plug in the ADSL modem or router and connect that to your PC - easy!
You'll need a line splitter for each telephone socket you use, whether
for phone or computer use, at your premises. Line splitters will
cost considerably less than £10 each.
Of course you'll also need a suitable modem or router. The choice
of whether to go for the USB-modem or Ethernet router options depends
upon whether you are a home or business user, and whether you are
wanting to network several PCs together. We would, for example,
recommend that you use a USB-modem with our ADSL Home Self-Install
and ADSL NetStart Self-Install services.
