Physically disconnecting your modem from the PC in Windows 2000

Windows 98 supports 'Hot plugging' of USB devices however that is not the case for Windows 2000. This is mainly due to the fact that Windows 2000 is build on the NT technology.

There is a specific procedure (described below) that the user has to follow in Windows 2000 in order to physically disconnect the modem from the PC.

Note: If this procedure is not followed (especially if the PPP session is up i.e. the modem is transferring some data) a number of fault conditions may occur. Workaround: Restart your PC with the modem still connected.

    1. In your system tray (bottom right corner of your screen) click on the icon encircled in the figure below

    2. image46

    3. The following window will appear. From the list of the devices (if there is one) highlight the Alcatel SpeedTouch USB ADSL as shown below. Click 'Stop'. image47

    4. At this point the Window requesting confirmation of your action will appear. Click' OK' to continue.

    5. image48

    6. The final message (as shown below) will inform you that you can safely remove (physically disconnect) the modem. Click 'OK' and disconnect your modem.
