Single
User USB Modem install Guide
Although we no longer offer the BT Install Service we do still provide support for customers using the service.
USB ADSL Modem Installation guide for Microsoft Windows 98 and 98SE
Please note; you will need the username and the password supplied to you separately by PlusNet.
Software installation
The installation
is performed by an install wizard that will guide you through the software installation
process.
-
The
modem MUST NOT be connected to the PC during the installation of the driver
software or it will not install properly.
-
Insert
the CD supplied. The install wizard runs automatically. If not then click
on 'Start' then 'Run' and type X:\start.exe (where X is the letter used
for your CD/DVD ROM drive).

Once the CD is inserted the
following window will appear. Click ''Next'' to start the installation process.

-
The following Licence Agreement
has to be accepted in order to continue the installation process. Click
''Yes '' to continue. If you choose 'No' the setup will close.

To install the modem software
files in the default location on your PC (see the figure below)click "Next".
Note:
If you want to make any changes to the default settings you may do so. Once
you have finished click 'Next' to continue.

To install the modem program
icon into the default location click ' Next' .

After the driver files are
copied the setup complete window (as shown below) should appear, click "Finish"
to complete software installation.
Note: If
the modem driver is being installed for the first time you can now go to the
next section (as you will not see any other message after the above) . However,
if this installation is a repeat or an upgrade then at this point you will be
asked to restart your PC. If that is the case then do so. After restarting your
PC, you can go to the final step of the installation described below.
Note: As
the files are being copied, you may be prompted for the Windows 98 CD. If
so, insert the CD and click "OK"

Modem Installation
This
section is only to be completed after the software has been installed

Find the
USB socket on your PC and connect modem's USB plug to it. Then connect one end
of the ADSL lead to the modem lead (as shown below, Figure a) and the other
end to the data socket of the incoming ADSL line.
Please note;
If the extension cable is supplied to you then you will have to plug in the
ADSL lead (see Figure a) to the end of the extension cable (not shown).

Setting up connection to
PlusNet
When the driver
installation is complete and the PC has been restarted both lights on your modem
should be solid green (If this is not the case then see the troubleshooting guide
supplied to you on the driver CD for further information). Then you can set-up
your dial-up connection to
PlusNet
as described below.
- Double-click the My Computer
icon on your desktop and then double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon.

Double click on ''Make New Connection''
icon (as shown below) to continue.

Once
the following window appears in the first box you can type any recognisable
name of your choice or you can use the default given (as shown below). In
the second box make sure that the device selected is ''SpeedTouch-Line0''.
If it is not there then select the line with the lowest line number. Click
''Next' to continue.

The
phone number entries in the following window are arbitrary, so enter a space
to ensure connection.

Click ''Next''. Click
''Finish'' on the window that follows (not shown).

A new icon with the name given
by you in step 2 of this section should be created in the dial-up networking
window ( ''My connection'' in this case). This is shown in the following
figure. Double-click the icon.

The window as shown in the
following figure should be displayed. Enter the user name and the password
(this will be supplied to you by
PlusNet).

Click the "Connect"
button to create the connection. (note: this can take a few moments)

The window as shown below will
appear when the connection has been established.

Now you
can use your web browser (Netscape, Internet Explorer etc..) to access the internet.
Logging off
-
Double click on the icon (encircled
in the figure below) that sits in your system tray in the right bottom corner
of your screen.

The following figure will appear.
Click ''Disconnect'' to log off

Uninstalling the USB modem software
Uninstalling the modem in
order to restart installation process or to remove the modem permanently
If you
encounter any problems during installation of the software and want to restart
the installation process again or if you want to remove the modem permanently
then the following procedure should be followed.
-
Re-insert the CD supplied.
The ''Install Wizard'' should start automatically. If that is not the case
then double-click the START.EXE file on the CD. The installation wizard
should the remove any previous installation automatically.
The
window as shown below should appear. Click ''OK'' to continue uninstall
process.
2. After
few moments the following window should appear. Click 'Finish'.

Note:
If you want to run the installation process again, re-insert the CD and
go through the installation process again. The only difference this time
is that at the end you will have to restart your PC.
Note:
If you damaged or lost your USB installation CD, then you can also remove
the USB related software via the 'Add/remove programs' application in your
Windows 98/98SE. This is the standard procedure and the application is found
in Window's 'Control panel'

Please note; if you have any problems during the installation process please refer
to the note in the ''Uninstalling the USB modem'' section on the end of
this document.
Also note,
you will also need the username and the password supplied to you separately
by PlusNet.
Software installation
The

At this point the window
as shown below will appear. This is a Windows 2000 message. This window
will appear during the installation of many device drivers due to
the fact that Windows 2000 has only just come on the market and therefore
all the official certifications could not be done in time. This will
not affect operation of your modem in any way Click ''Yes'' to continue.

After the driver files
are copied the set-up complete window (as shown below) should appear,
click "Finish" to complete software installation.

Note:
If the modem is installed for the first time you can now go to the next

Please ntoe;

At
this point the window as shown below will appear. This is a Windows 2000
message. As described in step 7 earlier this will not affect operation
of your modem in any way . Click ''Yes'' to continue.

Setting up connection to PlusNet
When
the driver installation is complete and the PC has been restarted both
lights on your modem should be solid green (If this is not the case then
see the troubleshooting supplied to you for further information). Then
you can set-up your dial-up connection to PlusNet as described.
Double-click the My Computer
icon on your desktop

Then double-click the
Dial-Up Networking Connection (as pointed out by the red arrow in
the following figure).

Double click 'Make New
Connection' icon (shown in the following figure) to continue.

The Windows 2000 wizard
that will guide the user through the installation process will appear
(shown below). Click 'Next' to continue.

At this stage the wizard
presents a number of options that you can choose from depending on
your network configuration and your requirements.
This user manual describes
the situation when the user wants to obtain fast internet access using
ADSL, from PlusNet (the most common case). Select second option
and click 'Next' to continue.
Note: For other types
of connections e.g. to a corporate intranet, options one or three
may be more appropriate. If this is the case please contact PlusNet
for more details.

The following window
presents you with more options. Again, depending on your circumstances
you may want to set-up a new or existing Internet account for the
ADSL use.
This manual describes
how to set up a new account manually . Select option three and click
'Next' to continue. Note:
If PlusNet advises you otherwise please follow our instructions

The window shown in the
figure below will appear. Select the first option and click 'Next'
to continue.

When the following window
appears scroll down the list of the modems and make sure that 'Alcatel
SpeedTouch USB ASDL PPPOA' is selected . Click 'Next' to continue.

The phone number entries
in the following window are arbitrary, so you can enter any dummy
number, but they must NOT be left blank.

Click ''Next''.
The window shown in the
following figure should be displayed. Enter the user name (in the
format username@freeonline.net) and the password ( they will
be supplied to you by PlusNet).

At this point you have
to enter a name for the dial-up connection that you are creating.
This can be the name of PlusNet or any name of your choice ( e.g.
'My Connection'. In the below case) Click ''Next'' to continue.

The following window
gives you the option of setting up you Internet e-mail account.
Your e-mail account details
will have to be given by PlusNet. The e-mail account is not required
for the modem operation and it can be set at the later time. See the
Technical Support
section of the portal for further details. Select 'No' and click 'Next'
to continue.

To complete your internet
connection set-up click 'Finish'.

When next window appears
click the "Connect" button to create the connection.(note:
this can take few moments)
The window as shown below
will appear when the connection has been established.

Now you can use your
web browser (Netscape, Internet Explorer etc..) to access the Internet.
Connecting to PlusNet
in the future
Whenever you want to
connect to PlusNet in the future you can use the new icon ,with
the name given by you in step 11 of this section ( e.g. ''My connection''
in this case)., that will be created in you 'Dial-Up Networking' window.
This is shown in the following figure. Double-click the icon.

Now enter you user name
and password (supplied by PlusNet)
Click 'Dial' to get
connected.

Logging off
-
Double click on the
icon (encircled in the figure below) that sits in your system tray
in the right bottom corner of your screen.

The following figure
will appear. Click ''Disconnect'' to log off.

Physically disconnecting your modem from the PC in Windows 2000
Windows 98 supports 'Hot
plugging' of USB devices however that is not the case for Windows 2000.
This is mainly due to the fact that Windows 2000 is build on the NT
technology.
There is a specific procedure
(described below) that the user has to follow in Windows 2000 in order
to physically disconnect the modem from the PC.
Note: If this procedure
is not followed (especially if the PPP session is up i.e. the modem
is transferring some data) a number of fault conditions may occur. Workaround:
Restart your PC with the modem still connected.

In your system tray
(bottom right corner of your screen) click on the icon encircled
in the figure below

The following window
will appear. From the list of the devices (if there is one) highlight
the Alcatel SpeedTouch USB ADSL as shown below. Click 'Stop'.

At this point the Window
requesting confirmation of your action will appear. Click' OK' to
continue.

The final message (as
shown below) will inform you that you can safely remove (physically
disconnect) the modem. Click 'OK' and disconnect your modem.

Uninstalling the USB modem software
Uninstalling
the modem software in order to restart installation process or to remove
the modem permanently
If
you encounter any problems during installation of the software and want
to restart the installation process again or if you want to remove the
modem permanently, then the following procedure should be followed.
-
Unplug the USB modem
from your PC. Please ensure you have followed the steps in 2.2.5
before doing this.
-
Re-insert the CD supplied.
The ''Install Wizard'' (as shown below) should start automatically.
If that is not the case then double-click the Start.exe file on
the CD.
-
Select 'Remove' and
click 'Next' to continue.
-
The window as shown
below should appear. Click ''OK'' to continue uninstall process.
-
After few moments the
following window should appear. Click 'Finish'.

Please note; if you want to
run the installation process again, re-insert the CD and go through
the installation process again. The only difference this time is that
at the end you will have to restart your PC.
Please note; if you have damaged or lost your USB installation CD, then you can also
