Changing the default password on a Thomson 585v7

Connection
Keywords: Thomson | 585v7 | 585 | | hardware | router | setup | broadband | wireless Summary: How to change the default password on a Thomson 585v7

If you got your router before Dec 2008 you shouldn't need to take any action.

If you visit http://192.168.1.254/ and are prompted for a username and password then the security flaw does not apply to you. You are already safe from the reported vulnerability and you need not take any action.

To change the default password on a Thomson 585v7 Follow these simple steps.

  1. First of all you need to open a web browser (the picture below shows Internet Explorer) and enter 192.168.1.254 in the address bar.

    Web browser

If you already have a password set then you'll be asked for it here, otherwise you'll be taken to the router configuration page.

  1. On the left hand side there is a list of options, select Toolbox as shown in the image below.

    Toolbox
  1. From here you need to click the links for User Management and then Change password.

    Change Password
  1. You'll be asked to enter the Old password and your New Password.

If you haven't previously changed the password, leave the Old Password box blank.

    Update Password

Click Change Password and you'll see a box asking for a User Name and Password. Enter the following details and click OK:

    • User Name: Administrator (Note the capital A)
    • Password: This is the password you've just set

Once you've done this, you'll be back at the User Management screen from step 3. You're now protected from the security vulnerability. To finish, close your web browser.

The next time you browse to 192.168.1.254 you'll be asked for your username and new password. You'll need to enter Administrator as the username.

Please Note:

  • If you ever visit a webpage and you're unexpectedly asked to enter your username and password, don't do it. Only ever do this if you are logging into 192.168.1.254 yourself
  • If your browser ever asks if you want it to save your router's admin password, we strongly recommend that you do not do this as it reduces its effectiveness against attack
