The PlusNet newsgroups

The PlusNet newsgroups are a place where you can talk about our service, submit feedback, or receive updates. Although many people now prefer to use the web forums, USENET continues to be a popular place for veteran Internet users. To make the newsgroups more accessible to less-experienced users, we now provide access to them through our website. This means you don't need to setup a newsreader program to benefit from our newsgroups.

Accessing PlusNet newsgroups through our website

You can find the PlusNet newsreader and a list of PlusNet newsgroups by clicking USENET on the left hand menu in the Member Centre.

Available PlusNet newsgroups

There are over 20 PlusNet newsgroups, each covering a different topic. The most popular newsgroups are:

  • plus.net.service.announce - moderated and used by us to make service announcements; often with more technical detail than we provide on our server status page or in our press releases.
  • plus.net.service.customer-feedback - our most popular newsgroup. Voice your opinion about our services. We provide support via this group and will enter into a dialogue with you here.
  • plus.net.service.status - this group is moderated and used by us to make announcements regarding our service status.
  • plus.net.social.chat - this group is an open forum for general chat about pretty much anything.

Most of our newsgroups allow anyone to post to them. However, some are reserved for official use; these are known as 'moderated' groups. Our 'announce' and 'service.status' groups are examples of moderated groups.

Many of the newsgroups are monitored by our support team to help us identify common user problems.

Guidelines for posting messages to USENET

What to include in your posts
If you make a posting try to provide as much information as possible. The more information you give, the more likely you'll get a helpful response, either from our support team, or another customer.

Replying to messages
Read Using the PlusNet Newsreader guide to find out how to reply to a message.

Advertising on the PlusNet newsgroups
Advertisements are not tolerated in any of the PlusNet newsgroups and will be removed if posted.

Cross-posting
Posting the same message to several newsgroups is not acceptable, and in the USENET community it is considered a form of spamming.

Newsgroup availability
The PlusNet news servers carry thousands of newsgroups. However, the Internet Watch Foundation has given us a list of publicly available newsgroups that are cause for concern, particularly in relation to child abuse. We have taken action to ensure that these newsgroups are not available via our service.
