What you need to know before you set up

Before you can do anything, you’ll need to make sure your broadband connection is up and running. We’ll send you a text or email when it’s good to go.

Here’s a few tips to think about when you are getting everything working:

  • Your broadband will work best if your router’s connected to the master telephone socket. Avoid putting your router somewhere where air can’t get to it because it can become hot.
  • Things like thick walls and concrete floors can actually weaken your wireless signal. So put your router as close to where you’re going to use it as possible.
  • It’s best to leave your router on all the time if you can. Have a read of our broadband speed tips for more on why.

Connect your microfilters

Microfilters already plugged in? Go to Connect your router and plug it in.

Plug a microfilter into each telephone socket you use in your property. If you had to unplug something you can plug it back into the Phone socket of the microfilter.

Phone sockets can be used by phones, alarm systems, fax machines and digital TV boxes, so make sure you don't miss anything out. Microfilters are essential for keeping your phone and Internet services from interfering with each other. Without microfilters you'll see poor speeds and connection drops.

  • You can use a microfilter before or after an extension lead, but not both
  • You can connect two devices to one microfilter if you use a phone adapter
  • If you need more microfilters, you can get them from most electrical stores and supermarkets
  • Don't plug a microfilter into the socket of another microfilter

Connect your router and plug it in

  1. Plug the grey telephone cable into the microfilter socket marked DSL.
  2. Plug the other end of the grey telephone cable into the DSL socket on the back of the router.
  3. Connect the power adapter and switch the router on with the power button at the back.
  4. The power light will initially be red and the DSL light will flash. Wait until they stop flashing and turn solid green before proceeding to the next section.

Connect your laptop, phone or other device to your router

Wired connection

Connect the ethernet cable to any of the four yellow Ethernet sockets on the back of your router.

Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet socket on your computer or laptop.

Wireless connection

To connect wirelessly, follow the instructions included with your computer, phone or other device to connect to your router via wi-fi. If you need help with this, please see our Wireless connection guides.

Wireless security is not enabled on this router as standard.

  • The wireless network name will be printed on the bottom of your router.
  • If you've recently reset your router, once logged in, you should set up security as soon as possible. You can use the Home Install Wizard on the CD to help with this.

Connect to the Internet

  1. On your computer, open a Web Browser, such as Internet Explorer or Safari. If you don't see the welcome page or you get a 'page cannot be displayed' error, type 192.168.1.254 into your browser's address bar and press enter on your keyboard.

    Access to your router settings is protected with a username and password. By default the username is Administrator and the password is blank. You can change these later to secure your settings from tampering. Next select Easy Setup from the menu.

  2. Select service. This will determine if you wish to setup just your broadband connection or your VoIP access as well. If you already have your VoIP account ready, select Router (1-line), otherwise select Router (no lines) and you can return later to add or edit settings if needs be. Click Next to continue.

  3. Type in your Broadband Username and Password and click Next.

  4. Finally you'll see a summary screen. Have a quick check through the settings to make sure everything is correct. Use the Back button if there's anything you need to change. Press Start to finish the setup wizard and connect to broadband.

  5. If you selected Router (No-line) in step 2, that's it! You're connected to Broadband.

    If you selected Router (1-line) you'll need to enter the settings for your VoIP service provider to continue. If you'd rather set this up later.

    You should complete your Broadband Phone settings as follows:

  6. For your changes to take effect you should restart your router. To do this you can go to the SpeedTouch Section of your router configuration screen and select Restart from the Pick a task… list.

  7. That's it! You're connected to Broadband. If you completed step 5, you're also ready to make VoIP calls.
