Guide to Channel Bonding with ISDN

For those unable to have broadband access, there is now the option to connect to a PlusNet Anytime account at 128k using ISDN channel-bonding. This provides almost three times the speed of a normal dialup service over a normal phone line. This guide tells you how you can activate this feature and start connecting at significantly faster speeds.

To activate dual-channel mode in Windows 2000/XP

1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.

2. Double-click Network and Dial-up Connections.

3. In Network and Dial-up Connections, right-click on the ISDN Dial-up Networking connection and select Properties and General tab.

Ensure that both ISDN channels are ticked. If both channels are ticked, make sure that All devices call the same number is also ticked.

4. Click on Configure and ensure that the Line types are set to the full 64K connection speed.

To activate dual-channel mode in Windows 98

Go into Dial-up Networking Properties - Multilink, select Use Additional Devices and add the two ISDN lines with both of them using the same access number.

To activate 'Bandwidth On Demand'
With this feature activated, the second ISDN channel will connect only when the first channel reaches its transfer limit. When the connection becomes inactive, the second channel ends its connection.This feature is great for Anytime customers wanting to make the most of their connection time.

Note that with the Pay As You Go service, each time an ISDN channel connects, a minimum call charge is applied. So very frequent, short connections can become expensive, making our Anytime service a must if you have ISDN.

1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.

2. Double-click Network and Dial-up Connections.

3. In Network and Dial-up Connections, right-click on the ISDN Dial-up Networking connection and select Properties and Networking tab. Click the Settings button under PPP:Windows 95/98/NT4/2000,Internet.

4. In the PPP Settings window, ensure Negotiate multi-link for single link connections is ticked. Then click OK.

5. On the ISDN Dial-up Networking connection box, select the Options tab.

6. On the Multiple devices drop-down select 'Dial devices only as needed'.

Your ISDN should now intelligently dial-up depending on your current bandwidth demand.
