Summary: Guide to checking or changing your settings in Windows 8 Mail
Select your provider?
Our website now provides help and support to customers of Plusnet, Force9 and Free-Online. Please select your provider using the drop-down menu and you will be provided with the technical support details that are appropriate to you.

Follow these instructions to check or edit the settings for your Plusnet or hosted domain email address.

  1. In mail, open the Charms bar and choose Settings.

    Bring up the 'Charms bar'.
  2. From the Charms bar, choose Accounts.

Choose 'Accounts' from the 'Charms bar'.
  3. You'll see a list of the email addresses currently set up. Select the address you want to check or edit from the list.

Choose your email account from the list.
  4. From here you can check and edit the settings for your email account. As the settings are shown in a single column, the screenshot below is edited to show most of the settings in one wider image. If you're not sure what the settings should be, look below the screenshot.

    Email settings.
    • Account name: This should be a useful description of the email address you're setting up (e.g. Mums email). You can put whatever you want here
    • Your Name: This should be your name (or the name you'd like people to see when you send them email)
    • Download new email: Choose how often you want Mail to check for new messages
    • Download email from: Choose how much email you want to download from the server
    • Content to sync: You'll only see Email as an option here. Make sure this is ticked, otherwise mail will not appear in your inbox
    • Automatically download external images: Choose whether you want Mail to automatically to load images that are not directly attached to a message. When set to Off you'll get the option to download images on each individual email
    • Use an email signature: Choose whether to append a signature to the messages that you send. Enter the text you want to use in the box. As standard this will say 'Send from Windows Mail'
    • Email address: This will show the address of the account that you're currently looking at
    • Email username & Password: Make sure you've entered the username and password for the email address you're setting up (I don't know what these are)
    • Incoming email server:
      The port should be 143
Make sure Server requires SSL is unticked
    • Outgoing email server:
      The port should be 25
Make sure Server requires SSL is unticked
    • Outgoing server requires authentication and Use the same username and password to send and recieve mail: Use these options to configure SMTP Authentication. You can find out more about this in our SMTP Authentication for Windows 8 Mail guide
    • Show email notifications for this account: Activate or turn off notifications when you receive new messages to this address
    • Special folders: These dropdown options will allow you to change where Mail puts Sent, Deleted and Junk mail. We do not recommend changing these unless you have a specific reason to do so
    • Remove account: As the name suggests, clicking this button will remove the account you're looking at
  5. Finally, click the back arrow at the top of the column to save the changes you've made.

Click the back arrow to save your changes.
