About the service

1. What is Plusnet Protect?

Plusnet Protect powered by McAfee is a series of programs designed to protect you, your family and your computers when using the Internet. It's available for all Plusnet residential broadband customers as an Add-On.

2. What features come with Plusnet Protect?

The main features of Plusnet Protect are:

  • Blocks viruses - Anti-Virus software stops viruses getting onto your computer, checks there are none already there and removes any found
  • Blocks spyware - Anti-Spyware software stops spyware being installed and removes existing spyware, keeping your data safe
  • Stops hackers - The firewall prevents unauthorised access to your computer and your data
  • Identity protection - Anti-Phishing software protects your identity
  • Protects children - Parental controls lets you set boundaries, so your children can browse the Internet, with offensive content and pictures filtered out
  • Protects your home network - My Home Network shows you all your connected devices so you can find out if someone is stealing your Internet connection
  • Data protection - Shredder allows you to permanently delete files which contain sensitive information
  • Keeps your PC up to date - Vulnerability Scanner finds and installs the latest updates for Windows and your programs
  • System Maintenance - QuickClean allows you to remove unnecessary system/browser files, helping maintain your PCs performance

3. Will it run on my computer?

Plusnet Protect works with Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome on the following Operating Systems:

  • Windows 8 and Windows 8.1
  • Windows 7
  • Windows Vista with SP1
  • Windows XP with SP3 (32-bit only)

Your computer needs to have the following minimum specification:

  • 512MB RAM (Windows XP)
  • 2GB RAM (Windows Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1)
  • 500MB of free hard drive space
  • 1Ghz processor

Note: Plusnet Protect doesn't currently work with:

  • Apple computers, tablets and phones
  • Android tablets and phones
  • Tablets running Windows RT

4. How much does it cost?

The price depends on your broadband product:

  • It's free for Unlimited and Unlimited Fibre Extra customers
  • £2 a month for Unlimited Fibre customers

5. How do I get Plusnet Protect?

Go to Add-Ons and chose Plusnet Protect from the list.

When the installer is ready for download, we'll send an email to your contact address.

6. Will it replace my current security software?

If you're installing Plusnet Protect, it's a good idea to uninstall any security software that's already installed on your computer. This is because running multiple security programs on a single computer can cause software conflicts.

It's best to uninstall your security software before you install Plusnet Protect. If you can't do this, Plusnet Protect should be able to uninstall existing software for you, but we can't guarantee this will work in all cases.

7. What if I change my Plusnet product?

  • If you move to Unlimited or Unlimited Fibre Extra, Plusnet Protect will be included for no additional cost.
  • If you move to Unlimited Fibre, you'll be charged £2 a month for Plusnet Protect.

8. How can I remove the Plusnet Protect service?

You can remove Plusnet Protect from your service in the Add-Ons section of the Member Centre. To remove the software from your computer you'll need to uninstall this by going to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.

9. How long does it take to install?

In most cases, the download and installation should be completed within about 30 minutes.

10. I'm having problems downloading, installing or using the software. What do I do?

If you've just added Plusnet Protect to your account, we'll email you a download link in a few hours. If you're having trouble installing Plusnet Protect, please contact our Support Team.

11. How do I scan my PC for viruses?

There are 3 ways to scan for viruses. You can either:

  1. Right click the Plusnet Protect icon The Plusnet Protect taskbar icon on your PC's taskbar (you'll find this at the bottom right corner of your screen). Then go to Scan > and choose Full, Quick or Custom
  2. Or click Virus and Spyware Protection on the Plusnet Protect home page. Then click Scan your PC and choose Full, Quick or Custom
  3. Click Navigation on the right on the Plusnet Protect home page, then Scan your PC under Features

12. Plusnet Protect is showing me the message 'Your Computer is at risk'. Why? What do I do?

This means you're not running 'real-time scanning'. You can turn it on as follows:

  1. Click Virus and Spyware Protection on the Plusnet Protect homepage
  2. Then click Real-time Scanning
  3. Finally, click Turn On, then Done

Your status bar will turn green and say 'Your Computer is secure'.

13. What happens if Plusnet Protect finds an infected file?

Plusnet Protect will try and clean the infected file. If this isn't possible you'll be given the option to quarantine the file, block access to it, or remove it completely.

14. Do I need to update the software myself?

Plusnet Protect will automatically check for updates every 4 hours (So long as you're connected to the Internet). You can also manually check for updates. To do this:

  1. Right-click on the Plusnet Protect icon The Plusnet Protect taskbar icon on your PC's taskbar
  2. Click Check for updates

15. Can I re-add Plusnet Protect after removing it?

Yes, all you'll need to do is:

  1. Go to your Add-Ons page (you'll need to sign in with your Account Username and Password)
  2. Click the Add button next to 'Plusnet Protect powered by McAfee'

16. How do I restore my default firewall settings?

To restore your default settings, follow these steps:

  1. Click Web and Email Protection on the Plusnet Protect homepage
  2. Then click Firewall
  3. Finally, click Restore Defaults

17. How do I delete files using Shredder?

You can delete files by following these steps:

  1. Click Data Protection and Backup from the Plusnet Protect homepage
  2. Click Shredder
  3. Choose a folder to shred; Recycle Bin, Temporary Internet Files or Let me choose - this will allow you to specify which files to shred
  4. Choose the shred type, from Quick to Comprehensive - comprehensive shreds are more secure but take longer
  5. Click Shred

18. How do I use QuickClean to perform system maintenance?

To run QuickClean follow these steps:

  1. Click PC and Home Network Tools from the Plusnet Protect homepage
  2. Then click QuickClean
  3. Click Clean - you can change what files are included under the settings menu beneath the top banner

You can use the Vulnerability Scanner to check for available updates by following these steps:

  1. Click PC and Home Network Tools from the Plusnet Protect homepage
  2. Click Vulnerability Scanner
  3. Click Scan
