Summary: A guide to some of the more advanced features of the IronPort spam filtering system.
Before an email gets anywhere near your inbox it'll be scanned by IronPort. If an email is sent from a mailserver with a bad SenderBase reputation then it'll be rejected and bounced back to the sender. Email that passes this first check is scanned and given a spam rating. What happens next depends on the settings you choose on the Spam tab in Manage My Mail. Here we'll talk about the two advanced options: 1. Discard Obvious SpamThis is an extra layer of filtering. If switched on, emails with a spam rating above a certain threshold will be deleted. This is not the same as rejecting an email - the message will not be bounced back to the sender. The threshold is set at a high level so only obvious spam should be deleted. If you suspect that legitimate email is being deleted by our anti-spam filters, then you should either switch this option off or add the address of the sender to your 'approved senders' list. [Top]2. QuarantineIf you choose this option, then anything that IronPort believes to be spam (that hasn't already been blocked or rejected) will be placed in quarantine on the IronPort server. Using QuarantineIf any messages have been quarantined then we'll send you an email the next morning to let you know.
If you want one of the listed emails to be sent to your inbox, click the Release link next to it. If you're happy that everything shown is spam then no further action is needed, we'll clear out everything that's older than 21 days. The email will only show new messages from the previous day, if you'd like to see all your quarantined email then you'll need to log in to the quarantine system directly. Logging in to QuarantineYou can only log in to quarantine if you pay for your Broadband or Dial-up account. If you use free PAYG dial up you won't be able to log in to the quarantine system, but you can still use the Quarantine notification emails to release messages as described above. There are two ways to log in to quarantine:
When you've logged in, you'll see the search screen. Click Search to bring up everything currently stored. If you click Advanced Search You can alter the date range and search for a subject line, from address or to address.
If anything is found you'll see a screen similar to the one below.
Reading MessagesTo read a message in the quarantine, click the message's subject. Releasing MessagesTo release a message from the Quarantine, click the checkbox next to the message (or messages) and then click the Release button. Deleting MessagesTo delete a message, click the checkbox next to the message(s) you want to get rid of and click the Delete button. If you don't do this, messages in your quarantine will be automatically deleted after 21 days. [Top]This page last updated 25th February 2009
