Network Performance

DNS Response Times

Summary: We use a number of tools to keep an eye on the performance of our network. Here are some of the graphs used to monitor sessions on our DNS servers. What you're seeing here is exactly what our Operations team see, so don't worry if you don't understand everything.

The graphs here show the response times of our caching DNS servers (how long in milliseconds it takes to look up a host address).

At present we have 8 caching servers, which are split evenly over 2 sites and handle traffic for our 4 public facing DNS IP addresses. Loadbalancers at each site make sure that the traffic is spread evenly across all servers.

The BBC website is used for measurement. An ideal situation is to have as low a response time as possible. For example, the lower the response time, the faster your browser will begin to download a webpage.

These graphs are updated automatically every 30 minutes.
