3. Does activating
the virus checker guarantee that I will never receive an email virus?
You are protected from all new viruses detected and added to the virus
definitions used by the Sophos virus engine. Most viruses are detected
before they are able to reach your computer, although there is a small
chance that a new virus could be distributed before our virus engine detects
it.

Spam
Protection FAQ
- How does the spam Filter
detect spam and separate it from genuine email?
- Does spam and email
checking work with SMTP mail delivery?
- Will the spam filter
delay delivery of my mail?
1. How does the
spam Filter detect spam and separate it from genuine email?
Each of your incoming emails is analysed for a number of factors that
commonly identify unsolicited emails (spam) and then rated based on the
results of this scan. If the email contains enough triggers, it will be
treated as spam.
| The following items are some of the common factors that identify
spam emails:
- If the email is coming through a known Open Relay mail server
- If the remote has a mismatch on its Domain Name Servers
- If the remote mailer provided incorrect information in the
HELO/ EHLO command
- If the MAIL FROM or RCPT TO information supplied by the email
is invalid
- If any of the Received: lines contain any hostnames or IP addresses
that are not resolvable
- If the Subject contains '[ADV]'
- If the header From: line is invalid in syntax or the host is
not resolvable.
- If the header To: line is invalid in syntax or is not resolvable.
- If the email subject line or message body matches any known
patterns that identify unsolicited commercial emails.
If the final score of the email goes over certain threshold levels
then it is considered spam. |

2. Does spam and
email checking work with SMTP mail delivery?
No. SMTP email doesn't get routed through our servers, it travels directly
to your system. If you operate SMTP mail you should ensure that you implement
your own anti-spam policy.

3. Will the spam
filter delay delivery of my mail?
No, not noticeably. All mail is checked as it reaches our servers, so
there is a slight delay as your email is scanned. For a normal email this
process takes fractions of a second so the delay will not be noticeable.
