What is a good business broadband speed?

“Good” business broadband speed depends what you use your broadband for. A good internet speed for a sole trader and a larger company will be very different. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

There are also a range of factors that affect your broadband speed, from the distance between the street cabinet and your office premises, to the number of staff sharing your connection. We'll explain how broadband works and how to get the best package to meet your business needs.

What determines my business broadband and Wi-Fi performance?

There are a range of factors that determine your business broadband speed and performance. The biggest factors are the distance from your office premises to the local street cabinet and your telephone exchange, and the product you take. These will control the actual 'line speed' we provide to your business.

From there how you use the service will determine what speed of connection you experience on your devices; whether that’s laptops, desktop PCs, consoles, tablets or smartphones. Some small businesses will be sharing their Wi-Fi with other staff and have several devices connected at the same time. Your line speed capacity can often, therefore, be shared between these devices and be lower than the speed estimate we provide you with.

Similarly, your Wi-Fi performance can also affect the speed you see on your connected device. Most modern devices will be capable of connecting on 5GHz, which our Hub One router supports. However, some older devices will only connect to the slower 2.4GHz radio frequency. Distance from your router can also affect Wi-Fi performance, as can thick brick walls for example. Check our general guide to improving Wi-Fi signal.

When deciding what business broadband package is best for you, it’s helpful to consider the type of business you’re running and how many staff or customers will be sharing your connection and what type of online activity you’ll be using your business broadband for. You can then choose the best deal to keep your business connected and running like clockwork.

Here’s some things you should consider:

Different types of business broadband bring different speeds.

The first thing that will determine your broadband speed is the package you have. Plusnet provides two business broadband products, with different average speeds:

    • Unlimited Business Broadband  – 17Mb average download speed Φ
    • Unlimited Business Fibre Broadband – 76Mb average download speed †

The technology used to deliver your package varies significantly.

Unlimited Business Broadband is an older product. It’s sometimes referred to as ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. Yep– you can see why it’s abbreviated!). This type of broadband uses copper cables to transfer information all the way back to the telephone exchange.

Unlimited Business Fibre Broadband use fibre optic cables from the exchange to the street cabinet and then the standard copper or aluminium telephone line to your home. This technology is called Fibre to the Cabinet or FTTC for short.  As fibre optic cables don’t suffer from signal degradation over distance like copper cables, the speeds available on fibre packages are much greater than for broadband.

Φ†Based on speed available to at least 50% of customers at peak time (8-10 pm). Speeds vary by location. Check your available speeds on our Business Broadband home page.

What business broadband speed do I need?

Different businesses have different needs, and our broadband packages come with features to suit all of them.

Unlimited Business Broadband gives you all the internet your business will need for its basic everyday activities. You'll be able to take electronic card payments, keep your website updated, play music and stay active on social media. It’s perfect for small retail and hospitality businesses.

If your online activities are essential to the running of your business such as getting all your employees  connected, processing online payments, ordering parts, booking appointments, marketing and providing a fast efficient customer service, then Unlimited Business Fibre Broadband delivers all the superfast speeds and reliability you need to thrive.

Discover Business Broadband and see how our packages can support your business.

Whichever package you choose, rest assured our network is constantly managed to ensure it delivers a high quality broadband connection for all our businesses.

What can slow broadband speed down?

Layout of your office or premises

The arrangement of office furniture, thickness of walls, and location of nearby electronic equipment can all disrupt or weaken the wireless signal your broadband router transmits to your devices.

Electronic interference can be generated by electronics operating at the 2.4GHz frequency - this is the same radio frequency many wireless routers use. As a result of this, several nearby routers operating simultaneously (often in neighbouring property) can sometimes interfere with each other and slow down the speed you get on your Wi-Fi connection.

This can be rectified by setting your router to operate on a separate channel and can depend on the type of router you're using. Some only have single channels available, others allow for minor frequency changes, and some routers can operate on 5GHz frequencies. Other electronic objects that may use the 2.4GHz band include cordless telephones, and devices that use Bluetooth.

You should also consider where you place your wireless router carefully. Wall insulation, water, brick, concrete, and doors constructed with metal can all have a detrimental effect on your Wi-Fi signal. Place your router close to the centre of your office or premises to ensure the best signal coverage.

Our guide on where to position your router for a good Wi-Fi signal has more tips to keep your connection running quickly.

    Amount of activity

As we mentioned earlier, a good broadband speed depends how it’s being used. If there’s a number of devices connected to your router at once, this can slow down your business broadband speed and you may need to upgrade to a faster package.

Hardware such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones can all connect to your business network in an instant. Simple web browsing, or reading emails take very little bandwidth and dozens of appliances should be able to connect to the same network without hindering performance.

However, downloading files, updating software, streaming or video calling can take up much more bandwidth, especially if multiple users are all doing so from different devices. This will lower the speed of everything connected to the network. If your Internet appears slow, try closing any programs with any high-bandwidth activity that aren't being used and only running one or two programs or apps at any one time.

What to do if your speed is lower than expected

If you are experiencing any other problems or have questions about your internet speed, don't hesitate to get in touch. Our business support team will help resolve your issues and get your internet back on track.
